The Controversies

E20 has not just divided vehicle owners — it has triggered FIRs, house arrests, deleted videos, paid promotion campaigns, deepfake lawsuits, conflict-of-interest allegations, and a Supreme Court remark that went viral. Here is what happened, who was involved, and what the verified facts say.

Sourav Joshi

India's most-subscribed lifestyle vlogger (39.5M+ subscribers)

+

What happened

Posted a vlog claiming his Mercedes-Benz SUV's mileage crashed from 17 km/l to 5 km/l on E20. The video went massively viral.

Outcome

Mercedes-Benz issued an advisory saying all its BS VI vehicles are E20-compatible. A service centre found an engine fault, not E20, was responsible. Joshi retracted and apologised on X. Users later noticed the E20 remarks were deleted from the original vlog — the deletion itself became a second controversy, with many asking if he was pressured.

Manish Kashyap

YouTuber with 9.3M+ subscribers, known for confrontational citizen journalism

+

What happened

Uploaded a viral video claiming his Toyota Innova Hycross developed serious engine problems — vibrations, knocking, breakdown-like symptoms — after just 12,000 km on E20, despite being E20-certified.

Outcome

Toyota inspected the vehicle and found contaminated fuel with external impurities — not standard E20 — had caused the issues. After draining and cleaning, the vehicle ran normally. Nagpur Cyber Police filed an FIR (July 14, 2026) against Kashyap and three other influencers under BNS Sections 353, 356, 296, and IT Act Section 67.

Tehseen Poonawalla

Political analyst, TV panelist, and activist

+

What happened

Leads the "Team Bharat" campaign demanding that fuel outlets sell pure petrol (E0), E5, and E10 alongside E20. Planned a "Gaadi March" to Parliament; Delhi Police denied permission. Announced a solo walk and hunger strike instead.

Outcome

Poonawalla alleged Delhi Police placed him under house arrest at his Greater Kailash residence, posting video of officers stationed outside. Police said the protest could lead to a "law-and-order situation." The incident was covered by The Tribune, Scroll, Outlook India, and DNA.

Paid Influencer Campaign (Pro-E20)

Government-backed PR campaign exposed by auto creator The Race Monkey

+

What happened

The Race Monkey publicly shared screenshots of a pitch from an influencer agency (Hextech Media) offering up to ₹15 lakh to post pro-E20 content highlighting farmer welfare and environmental benefits. He turned it down.

Outcome

Alt News and BOOM investigated and confirmed the paid campaign. Influencers including Abhishek Malhan (Fukra Insaan, 1.15 crore views on his E20 video), RJ Naved, and others participated without marking posts as paid partnerships. Malhan later said the reel was made 1.5 years prior and had been taken down.

The FIR Against Four Influencers

Manish Kashyap, Desi Boys NCR, Harshit Rathi, and Anklesh Invate

+

What happened

FIR No. 0092/2026 filed by Nagpur Cyber Police on a complaint from the convenor of BJP's Nagpur City Social Media Cell, alleging the four used fake or misleading interviews to malign the E20 policy and a senior minister's image.

Outcome

Anklesh Invate's Instagram was deactivated after the FIR. Harshit Rathi's account also disappeared. Both reportedly shared apology videos. The case raised press-freedom questions about whether criticism of a government policy should attract criminal prosecution.

The "Experiment" Remark in Supreme Court

Attorney General R. Venkataramani, in a Supreme Court hearing

+

What happened

On June 30, 2026, during a hearing on a BPCL ethanol-allocation dispute, the Attorney General told the bench that E20 is "something the government is experimenting with" and that results would come next year. Court video of the remark went viral.

Outcome

The AG's office issued a swift denial, claiming no such submission was made and that the remark related only to the commercial dispute before the court. However, video of the hearing contradicted the denial. The Wire called it "Emperor's Experiment and Guinea Pig Public." The incident became a rallying point for critics who argued the government was testing an unproven policy on 300 million vehicles.

Gadkari's ₹11 Crore Deepfake Lawsuit

Union Minister Nitin Gadkari vs Meta, X, and Google

+

What happened

Gadkari filed a civil suit seeking ₹11 crore in damages over AI-generated deepfakes and defamatory social media posts linking him and his family to profits from the E20 ethanol programme. He sought permanent injunctions directing the platforms to take down the content.

Outcome

The Bombay High Court permitted Gadkari to proceed with the suit on July 27, 2026. Gadkari maintains E20 falls under the Ministry of Petroleum, not his ministry (Road Transport), and that ethanol contributes less than 10% of his family's business turnover. The case is ongoing.

Journalist Megha Prasad's Mileage Challenge

News anchor, News18

+

What happened

In a televised interview, Prasad confronted Gadkari with her own experience: her Honda City's mileage had dropped from 11–12 km/l to 7 km/l on E20. She asked him directly what vehicle owners are supposed to do.

Outcome

Gadkari responded that personal tank-fill mileage checks are "unreliable" and should be verified at authorised dealers using machines. He advised owners under warranty to file a dealer complaint and pursue consumer court. The response itself went viral — critics called it dismissive, arguing the minister was telling millions of owners their own experience doesn't count.

Conflict-of-Interest Allegations

Congress leader Pawan Khera

+

What happened

Alleged that two companies linked to the family of the minister championing E20 saw revenues jump from ₹18 crore to ₹523 crore and stock prices surge over 2,100% after the ethanol mandate. Congress demanded a Lokpal probe.

Outcome

These are allegations, not proven facts. The ruling party dismissed the charges. No Lokpal investigation has been announced. The allegations were reported by Deccan Herald and The Print.

All information above is sourced from published news reports and is presented factually. Allegations are identified as such. VahanChod does not endorse any political party or individual. Our interest is consumer protection and fuel choice.

Our Three Demands

This is not a demand to ban ethanol. It is a demand for choice, protection and honesty on a policy that was made mandatory for everyone, overnight.

01

Bring Back Normal Petrol as an Option

Sell E0, E5 and E10 petrol at every pump alongside E20. Since April 1, 2026, drivers have had no choice — a vehicle owner should be able to decide what fuel goes into the vehicle they own and maintain.

02

Protect the Owners Already Paying the Price

Commission independent, government-funded studies into E20’s effect on pre-2023 vehicles, and set up compensation or retrofit support for owners whose engines, fuel systems or mileage have been hit. People are footing repair bills for a fuel they never chose.

03

Full Transparency on the Policy

Label ethanol content clearly at every pump, publish the real cost and mileage data, and answer the questions the public and the courts are asking about how this policy was rushed through — and who benefits from it.

A wave of citizen protest

The E20 Janta Party & the Fight for Fuel Choice

Across India, a citizen-led online movement is demanding one simple thing: the right to choose your fuel. After the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) turned public anger into a viral force, the E20 Janta Party (@E20Party) has emerged on social media with one sharp demand — let people buy 100% pure petrol alongside E20 at every pump.

VahanChod stands with this movement. We are not a political party and hold no political affiliation. Like the E20 Janta Party, we are ordinary citizens and vehicle owners asking for choice, transparency and protection — not a ban on ethanol. One demand unites all of us: bring back the option of normal petrol.

The Ministries Responsible

Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas

Made E20 the only petrol at every pump from April 1, 2026 — without keeping lower blends available for the crores of vehicles never certified for it, and without a transition or consumer-protection mechanism.

Ministry of Road Transport & Highways

Oversaw a vehicle-standards regime that left pre-2023 vehicles exposed to a fuel they were not designed for, with no retrofit support or compensation route for owners facing damage.

Our Concerns

Engine Damage

Vehicles manufactured before 2019 are NOT designed to run on E20 (20% ethanol blend). Rubber seals, fuel pumps, and carburettors degrade rapidly when exposed to high-ethanol fuels.

Power & Mileage Loss

Ethanol contains ~34% less energy per litre than pure petrol. E20 blending causes measurable drops in power output and fuel economy — you pay the same price for less energy.

No Compensation for Owners

Crores of existing vehicle owners face repair costs and resale value loss. The government offered zero compensation, retrofit subsidies, or transition protections.

Opaque Pricing

Ethanol procurement prices are heavily subsidised to sugar mills — a politically connected industry — while pump prices remain unchanged. The consumer bears the full cost burden.

Premature Rollout — Now Fully Mandatory

E20 became mandatory at all petrol pumps nationwide from April 1, 2026. Fuel dispensing infrastructure, vehicle compatibility testing, and public communication remain woefully inadequate for the scale of India's existing vehicle fleet.

Rural & Commercial Vehicle Impact

Two-wheelers, auto-rickshaws, and older commercial vehicles dominate Indian roads. These are the vehicles most sensitive to ethanol damage — and owned by the most economically vulnerable citizens.

Make it personal

Is Your Vehicle at Risk From E20?

Since April 1, 2026, E20 (20% ethanol) is the only petrol at Indian pumps. Whether that hurts your vehicle depends mostly on how old it is. Pick your vehicle below for a quick, honest assessment.

The E20 Price Paradox

When E20 became fully mandatory nationwide on April 1, 2026, pump prices were raised by ₹5.61/L in May 2026 — the first hike in four years. The energy content per litre dropped by ~6–7% with E20 blending, but consumers now pay ₹102.12/L in Delhi. Less energy delivered, higher price charged — see the full cost breakdown below.

E20 vs Premium Petrol — City-Wise Prices

Snapshot as of July 25, 2026. Regular petrol is now E20 everywhere. Premium fuels (XP95, Speed 97, poWer 99) cost ₹10–13/L more but are not guaranteed E0 — the BIS spec permits E20 in all grades. Prices vary by state VAT.

Premium prices are approximate and vary by pump. Premium petrol may still be E20 — higher octane does not mean lower ethanol. There is currently no commercially available E0 (pure petrol) at any Indian fuel station.

E20 vs. Pure Petrol: The Real Cost

There's no pump-to-pump price comparison to make anymore — pure, unblended petrol (E0) hasn't been sold at regular retail pumps anywhere in India since the E20 mandate took full effect on April 1, 2026. What's left is a production-cost comparison, and the government's own explanation undercuts the case for E20 as a money-saver.

At current crude oil prices (around $70/barrel), the Centre has said E20 is more expensive to produce than pure petrol. Ethanol is procured from producers at a fixed price of roughly ₹71.86 per litre for maize-based ethanol, before GST, transport, storage, and depot handling charges are added. That math would only flip in ethanol's favour if crude climbed to $120–130/barrel — well above where it sits today. Officials have also been explicit that blending was never designed to cut fuel prices; its stated goal is reducing India's dependence on imported crude, not saving consumers money.

Put together: consumers are paying a pump price that went up in May 2026, for a fuel that delivers ~6–7% less energy per litre, and that the government itself says currently costs more to produce than the petrol it replaced.

History of E20 Petrol in India

From the 2003 ethanol programme to the movement now pushing back against it — a complete timeline of how India got here, who benefits, and why vehicle owners are suffering.

LaunchPolicyMilestoneMandateControversyProtest
2003
Launch

Ethanol Blended Petrol Programme Launched

The Government of India officially launched the Ethanol Blended Petrol (EBP) Programme in January 2003, initially requiring 5% ethanol blending in 9 states and 4 Union Territories. The Auto Fuel Policy of 2003 also proposed developing ethanol and biofuel technologies.

2006
Milestone

E5 Rollout Begins

E5 (5% ethanol blend) was rolled out across multiple states. Implementation was patchy and uneven — poor sugarcane harvests and pricing disputes with sugar mills led to frequent supply shortfalls.

2009
Policy

National Policy on Biofuels

The National Policy on Biofuels was announced in December 2009, setting an indicative target of 20% blending of biofuels in transport fuels (both petrol and diesel) by 2017. The target was aspirational and was not legally mandatory.

2013–14
Milestone

Blending Stalls at Just 1.5%

Despite a decade of the EBP Programme, actual nationwide ethanol blending averaged a mere 1.5% — far below the 5% mandate. Reasons included inadequate ethanol supply infrastructure, low sugar production years, and poor procurement pricing.

2018
Policy

National Policy on Biofuels 2018 (NPB-2018)

A revised National Policy on Biofuels was notified in June 2018 with ambitious targets: E10 by 2022, E20 by 2030. For the first time, multiple feedstocks beyond sugarcane — including damaged foodgrains, agricultural residue, and lignocellulosic material — were permitted for ethanol production.

2021

NITI Aayog Roadmap Brings E20 Target Forward to 2025

NITI Aayog's "Roadmap for Ethanol Blending in India 2020–25" advanced the E20 target from 2030 to 2025 — a five-year acceleration with minimal public consultation. The roadmap estimated savings of ₹30,000 crore per year in foreign exchange by 2025.

Jun 2022
Mandate

E10 Target Achieved — Five Months Early

India achieved 10% ethanol blending nationally in June 2022, five months ahead of the original November 2022 deadline. The NPB-2018 was simultaneously amended to further consolidate E20 expansion plans.

Apr 2023
Milestone

E20 Pilot Launched in 11 States/UTs

E20 petrol pilot began at select pumps across 11 states and Union Territories including Bengaluru, Pune, and select metros. Simultaneously, the government mandated that all new vehicles from April 2023 must be E20-material compliant — raising immediate concerns for the hundreds of millions of pre-2023 vehicles on Indian roads.

Apr 2025
Mandate

Nationwide E20 Rollout Begins

E20 began replacing E10 as the standard petrol blend at pumps across the country. Rollout was rapid and consumers in most cities found E20 at their regular fuel stations with little advance notice or public communication about compatibility risks to older vehicles.

Sep 4, 2025
Controversy

Congress Alleges Conflict of Interest, Demands Lokpal Probe

The Congress party publicly accused Union Minister for Road Transport & Highways Nitin Gadkari — one of the ethanol programme's most vocal champions — of a conflict of interest, naming his sons Nikhil Gadkari (Cian Agro Industries Infrastructure Ltd) and Sarang Gadkari (director, Manas Agro Industries) as major beneficiaries of the policy. Congress cited Cian Agro's revenue rising from ₹18 crore in June 2024 to ₹523 crore in June 2025, alongside a 2,184% stock price surge over the same period, and demanded a Lokpal investigation. This is a disputed political allegation, not a proven finding — see the section below for Gadkari's response.

Aug 2025
Mandate

Government Declares E20 Target Achieved

On August 8, 2025, the Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas declared that India had achieved 20% ethanol blending nationwide — five years ahead of the original 2030 target. The government cited ₹1.36 lakh crore in cumulative forex savings and significant carbon emission reductions. Consumer and vehicle damage impacts went unaddressed in official communications.

Feb 2026
Mandate

Mandatory E20 Notification Issued

On February 17, 2026, the Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas issued an official notification mandating E20 (with a minimum 95 RON specification) at all fuel stations across all states and Union Territories from April 1, 2026. Retailers were given less than 6 weeks to comply.

Apr 1, 2026
Mandate

E20 Becomes the Only Petrol Available in India

Full mandatory nationwide enforcement of E20 petrol began. Consumers across India — including owners of vehicles not designed for high-ethanol blends — had no access to unadulterated petrol at regular fuel stations. No retrofit support, compensation, or transition mechanism was made available to existing vehicle owners.

Jul 5, 2026
Protest

First Public Protest Against E20 Held at Jantar Mantar

Motorists gathered at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi for India's first public demonstration against the E20 mandate, organised by Tehseen Poonawalla's advocacy group Team Bharat under the banner "Hamaari Gaadi, Hamaara Adhikaar" (Our Vehicle, Our Right). Protesters described mileage drops, clogged fuel systems, and repair bills. Their central demand: keep E0, E5, and E10 petrol available alongside E20 so motorists can choose what goes in their own vehicle.

Why Vehicles Are Suffering

Ethanol Absorbs Water

Ethanol is hygroscopic — it draws moisture from the air. In fuel tanks and lines, this can cause phase separation and internal corrosion of metal fuel-system components not built to handle it.

Seals & Hoses Degrade

Rubber, plastic, and fibreglass parts — seals, gaskets, hoses, fuel pump diaphragms — in pre-2023 vehicles were never manufactured to resist high ethanol concentrations, and swell, crack, or perish with prolonged exposure.

Less Energy Per Litre

Ethanol carries roughly 34% less energy per litre than pure petrol. Moving from E10 to E20 typically reduces mileage, even as pump prices stay the same or rise.

The Result, Reported by Owners

Clogged fuel injectors and carburettors, failing fuel pumps, reduced power, and lower mileage — the same complaints raised by mechanics and vehicle owners nationwide, and by protesters at Jantar Mantar.

The Conflict of Interest Question

Nitin Gadkari, as Union Minister for Road Transport & Highways, has been one of the government's most vocal advocates for accelerating ethanol blending. In September 2025, the Congress party alleged that his sons — Nikhil Gadkari (Cian Agro Industries Infrastructure Ltd) and Sarang Gadkari (director, Manas Agro Industries) — stood to benefit financially from the policy, pointing to Cian Agro's revenue growing roughly 29x in a year and its stock price surging over 2,000%, and called for a Lokpal probe.

Gadkari has rejected the allegations, saying his sons' sugar-and-alcohol business existed long before the ethanol programme, that it accounts for well under 1% of India's total ethanol supply, and has described the campaign against him as politically motivated. This remains a disputed, politically contested allegation — not a court finding or proven fact — and this site presents it as exactly that.

Why We're Protesting

On July 5, 2026, motorists held India's first public demonstration against the E20 mandate at Jantar Mantar, New Delhi — citing mileage drops, clogged fuel systems, and repair bills. VahanChod exists to carry that same demand online: not a ban on ethanol, but the right to choose what fuel goes into a vehicle you own and are responsible for maintaining.

  • Keep E0, E5, and E10 petrol available alongside E20 at every pump — restore consumer choice
  • Independent, government-funded studies on engine and fuel-system damage in pre-2023 vehicles
  • Compensation or retrofit subsidies for owners whose vehicles were damaged by E20
  • Clear, mandatory labelling of ethanol content at every pump

Future Targets

E25 / E27Under study

Government has notified technical standards for E25 and E27 blends. ARAI tasked with studying impact on existing E10 and E20-compliant vehicles before any mandate.

E302028–2030 est.

E30 standards notified. No firm mandatory timeline set yet. Flex-fuel vehicles would be required as E30 damages fuel systems in most current vehicles.

E85 (Flex-Fuel)Draft stage, 2027+

Draft rules proposed under Central Motor Vehicles Rules to enable E85-capable flex-fuel vehicles. Automobile manufacturers are developing compatible models.

E100Long-term, 2030+

Pure ethanol fuel standard proposed for dedicated flex-fuel or ethanol-only vehicles. Brazil's model is frequently cited as the reference point by Indian policymakers.

The Pattern: Targets Accelerated, Safeguards Skipped

The original E20 target was 2030. NITI Aayog moved it to 2025 in 2021. The government claimed it by August 2025 and made it mandatory from April 2026. At each acceleration, the government skipped independent engine damage studies, consumer compensation frameworks, and public communication campaigns. The result: hundreds of millions of vehicle owners are now mandated to use a fuel their vehicles were not designed for, with no recourse.
