If you believe E20 has damaged your vehicle, documentation is everything. A consumer court case, an insurance claim, an RTI follow-up, or even a compelling social media post — all require evidence. Here is exactly what to document, how to document it, and why each piece matters.

Why documentation matters

E20-related vehicle damage is difficult to prove because ethanol does not leave a single, dramatic failure signature. It causes gradual degradation: rubber slowly swells, metal slowly corrodes, mileage slowly drops. Without documentation, you are left saying “I think E20 caused this” rather than “here is the evidence that this component degraded after the fuel changed.”

The burden of proof in a consumer complaint or court case is on you. The dealer or manufacturer will argue that the damage is due to normal wear, poor maintenance, or driving conditions. Your documentation needs to counter these arguments with dated, specific, verifiable evidence.

The documentation toolkit

You need four types of documentation:

  1. Mileage logs (proving the mileage drop)
  2. Photographic evidence (proving physical damage)
  3. Service records (proving maintenance was adequate)
  4. Financial records (proving the cost you incurred)

1. Mileage logs: proving the mileage drop

The mileage drop from E20 is the most universal and provable impact. Every vehicle owner can measure it.

How to log mileage

  • At every fill-up, record three numbers:odometer reading, litres filled, and total cost. Use your phone’s notes app, a spreadsheet, or a dedicated fuel-tracking app (Fuelio, Drivvo, or similar).
  • Calculate km/l for each tank: (current odometer − previous odometer) ÷ litres filled. This gives your real-world mileage per tankful.
  • Record consistently: Fill the tank full each time (full-to-full method). Partial fills make the calculation inaccurate.
  • Note the fuel pump and city: If you fill at different pumps, record which one. Ethanol percentages may vary between outlets.
  • Record driving conditions: Note whether the driving was primarily city or highway. This helps establish a consistent baseline.

Building the case

If you have historical data (mileage logs from when E10 or E5 was the norm), the comparison is straightforward. If not, start logging now. After 10–20 fill-ups, you will have a reliable average that can be compared against the vehicle’s ARAI-rated mileage (adjusted for real-world conditions).

A log showing consistent mileage of 18 km/l dropping to 16.8 km/l after E20 became standard is strong evidence. A vague statement that “mileage seems lower” is not.

2. Photographic evidence: proving physical damage

When a fuel-system component fails or shows damage, photograph it before and during replacement. Your phone camera is sufficient.

What to photograph

  • Swollen fuel lines: Place the old fuel line next to a new one of the same type. The size difference is visible and dramatic. Include a ruler or coin for scale.
  • Cracked or deteriorated rubber: Close-up photos showing surface cracks, splits, or material breakdown. Use good lighting. The camera flash often works well for this.
  • Corroded carburettor: White oxide deposits on zinc carburettor bodies. Photo the entire carburettor and a close-up of the corroded area.
  • Clogged fuel filter: A clogged filter next to a new, clean filter of the same type. The colour difference shows contamination clearly.
  • Rust in the fuel tank: If the tank is opened or a fuel sample is taken, photograph any rust flakes, sediment, or discoloured fuel.
  • Degraded gaskets and O-rings: Swollen or deformed gaskets removed during service. Compare with the new replacement if possible.
  • Milky oil cap residue: If your oil filler cap shows the milky emulsion indicating moisture contamination, photograph it.

Photo documentation best practices

  • Enable timestamps: Ensure your phone’s camera records date and time in photo metadata (most phones do this by default). Do not crop or edit photos — the original metadata is part of the evidence.
  • Take multiple angles: Wide shot showing the part in context (on the vehicle or on the mechanic’s bench), plus close-ups of the specific damage.
  • Include the vehicle in the frame: At least one photo should show the vehicle’s registration plate or VIN alongside the damaged part. This links the evidence to your specific vehicle.
  • Video is even better: A 30-second video of the mechanic pointing out the damage while explaining what they see is powerful evidence. It captures the mechanic’s professional assessment in their own words.

3. Service records: proving maintenance was adequate

The most common defence against an E20 damage claim is “the owner didn’t maintain the vehicle properly.” Your service records counter this argument.

What to keep

  • All service invoices: Every oil change, filter replacement, and scheduled service. Authorised service centre invoices carry more weight than local mechanic receipts, but both are valid.
  • Service booklet stamps: If your vehicle has a physical service booklet, ensure it is stamped at every service. This is the manufacturer’s own record of maintenance compliance.
  • Parts replacement records: Invoices for fuel filters, fuel lines, fuel pumps, injectors, carburettor parts. These show that the fuel system was maintained, and also document the frequency of replacement (which may be higher than normal due to E20).
  • Odometer readings on invoices: These establish a timeline. If the fuel filter was replaced at 40,000 km and again at 48,000 km (instead of the usual 15,000–20,000 km interval), this documents accelerated clogging.

The maintenance narrative

Your service records should tell a story: “I maintained this vehicle per the manufacturer’s schedule. After E20 became standard, I began experiencing issues I had never had before. Here are the dates, the symptoms, and the repairs.”

4. Financial records: proving the cost

If you pursue a consumer complaint or court case, you need to quantify the financial impact. This includes:

Direct repair costs

  • All invoices for E20-related repairs (fuel pump replacement, fuel-line replacement, injector cleaning, carburettor rebuild)
  • Parts cost and labour cost separately itemised if possible
  • Towing charges if the vehicle broke down

Increased fuel costs

  • Your mileage log (see section 1) provides the per-tankful cost comparison
  • Calculate the total additional fuel cost over the period: (litres at E20 mileage − litres at E0/E10 mileage) × fuel price
  • This is an ongoing cost that accumulates every month

Consequential costs

  • Lost income if the vehicle was off-road for repairs (particularly relevant for Ola/Uber drivers, delivery riders, and auto-rickshaw operators)
  • Alternative transport costs during repair downtime
  • Any costs incurred due to a breakdown (being stranded, emergency repairs at a roadside mechanic, etc.)

Getting a mechanic’s written statement

A mechanic’s professional opinion linking the damage to E20 is valuable evidence. Ask your mechanic to write (or sign) a brief statement including:

  • The mechanic’s name, workshop name, and contact details
  • The vehicle details (make, model, year, registration number)
  • The date of inspection
  • The specific components that were damaged or degraded
  • The mechanic’s opinion on whether the damage is consistent with ethanol exposure (swelling, corrosion patterns, material degradation type)
  • Whether the damage pattern is unusual for the vehicle’s age and mileage

Most mechanics will provide this if asked. Some may be reluctant if they are authorised service centre employees (they may need management approval). Independent mechanics are typically more willing. Pay them for their time if necessary — ₹200–500 for a written inspection report is reasonable.

Where to use your documentation

Consumer court

File a complaint under the Consumer Protection Act 2019 in the District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum. Your documentation (mileage logs, photos, service records, repair invoices, mechanic’s statement) forms the evidence package.

CPGRAMS grievance

Attach photos and summarise your financial impact in the grievance text. CPGRAMS complaints with specific, quantified damages and photographic evidence receive more attention than general complaints.

RTI applications

Your documentation supports the basis for your RTI questions. “I have experienced X damage costing Y rupees — how many similar complaints has the ministry received?” is a stronger RTI question than a general inquiry.

Insurance claims

If you file an insurance claim for fuel-system damage, the insurer’s surveyor will assess the damage. Your pre-existing photos and service records help establish that the damage is recent and not pre-existing.

Media and social media

Journalists and content creators covering the E20 issue need specific cases with evidence. A well-documented case with photos, mileage data, and repair costs is far more compelling than an anecdote. If you share your experience publicly, the documentation makes it credible and useful.

The best time to start documenting was when E20 arrived. The second-best time is now. Begin your mileage log today. Take baseline photos of your fuel lines and fuel filter at your next service. Keep every receipt. If your vehicle is running fine, this documentation costs you nothing but proves due diligence. If your vehicle develops problems, you will have the evidence you need.

The government changed the fuel. The vehicle fleet did not change with it. If you bear the cost, you should at minimum have the evidence to prove it.
