“Just use Speed 97” or “Fill XP95 — it’s pure petrol.” This advice is everywhere. But is premium petrol actually free of ethanol? The answer is more complicated than the branding suggests.

What premium petrol actually is

India’s three oil marketing companies (OMCs) each sell a premium petrol brand:

  • Indian Oil — XtraPremium (XP95): Rated at 95 RON (Research Octane Number)
  • Bharat Petroleum — Speed 97: Rated at 97 RON
  • Hindustan Petroleum — poWer 99: Rated at 99 RON

Premium petrol differs from regular petrol in octane rating, not in ethanol content. The higher octane number means the fuel resists knocking better, which can benefit high-compression engines. It does not, by itself, mean the fuel contains less ethanol.

Does premium petrol contain ethanol?

This is the critical question, and the answer varies:

The BIS specification

The Bureau of Indian Standards specification IS 2796:2017 (Amd. 6) covers all grades of motor spirit (petrol) sold in India. Under the current specification, ethanol blending up to 20% is permitted across all grades — regular and premium alike.

This means: premium petrol can legally be E20. The specification does not exempt premium grades from ethanol blending.

What OMCs actually blend

In practice, the ethanol content of premium fuels varies by location, refinery, and supply logistics. Some key realities:

  • Premium fuels at some pumps may contain less ethanol than the regular E20 blend — sometimes E10 or even lower. This is not a guarantee; it depends on the supply chain for that specific pump.
  • OMCs have not publicly committed to keeping premium fuels at a specific ethanol level. There is no “E0 premium” product on the market.
  • The ethanol content is not displayed on premium dispensers any more consistently than on regular ones.

In short: you cannot assume premium petrol is ethanol-free. Some batches may have less ethanol than regular E20. Others may be identical to E20, just with octane-boosting additives.

The octane illusion

Here’s an irony: ethanol itself is a high-octane compound. Pure ethanol has an octane rating of about 108–109 RON. Blending ethanol into petrolraises the octane number.

This means it is theoretically possible for a “premium” fuel to achieve its high octane rating partly because of ethanol, not despite it. An E20 blend with the right base stock could hit 95 RON more cheaply than an E0 blend, because the ethanol does the octane-boosting work.

Whether OMCs are doing this is not publicly disclosed. But the chemistry makes it plausible. A consumer paying a premium for “better fuel” may be getting more ethanol, not less.

Price comparison

Premium fuels typically cost ₹10–20 more per litre than regular petrol, depending on the city and brand. If the premium fuel contains the same 20% ethanol as regular petrol, you are paying more for additives and octane — not for an ethanol-free product.

The cost-benefit only makes sense if:

  • Your engine is designed for 95+ RON fuel (most Indian cars are tuned for 91 RON)
  • The premium fuel genuinely contains less ethanol (which you cannot verify at the pump)
  • The reduced ethanol content offsets the higher price per litre

For the average vehicle, premium petrol is unlikely to solve the E20 problem.

Does premium petrol protect against E20 damage?

If the premium fuel has the same ethanol percentage as regular E20, it providesno additional protection against ethanol-related damage. Ethanol’s corrosive and hygroscopic properties are a function of its concentration, not the octane rating of the blend.

Higher octane does not:

  • Reduce ethanol’s tendency to absorb water
  • Prevent rubber and gasket degradation from ethanol exposure
  • Stop fuel-tank corrosion in vehicles without ethanol-resistant coatings
  • Restore the energy content lost to ethanol blending

If your vehicle is suffering E20 damage, switching to premium petrol is not a reliable fix unless you can confirm the premium blend has meaningfully less ethanol.

How to actually check

There is no consumer-facing tool that tells you the ethanol content of premium petrol at a specific pump. Your options:

  • Ask the pump manager (not just the attendant) what blend the premium fuel is. Some managers know; most don’t.
  • Check OMC communications: Occasionally, OMCs release press statements about premium fuel specifications. These are worth tracking.
  • DIY water-separation test: The same test used for regular petrol works for premium. Collect a sample and check (see our pump fuel check guide).
  • Lab testing: For certainty, a BIS-accredited lab can measure the exact ethanol percentage.

What consumers actually want

The E20 controversy would be simpler if OMCs offered a clearly labelled “E0 Pure Petrol” product at a defined price point. Consumers could then make an informed choice: E20 for those whose vehicles handle it, E0 for those whose vehicles don’t.

Premium petrol, as currently sold, does not fill this role. It is a higher-octane product, not a lower-ethanol one. Treating it as an E20 workaround is unreliable at best and expensive guesswork at worst.

The bottom line

  • Premium petrol can be E20. The BIS spec permits it.
  • Some premium batches may have less ethanol, but this is not guaranteed or disclosed.
  • Higher octane does not protect against ethanol damage.
  • Paying ₹10–20 extra per litre for an unverified ethanol reduction is not a reliable strategy.
  • The real solution is fuel choice: a clearly labelled E0 option at every pump.
