You can’t avoid E20 — it’s the only petrol at the pump. But you can reduce the risk of damage. This guide covers the practical steps mechanics and engineers recommend to protect older vehicles that were never designed for 20% ethanol.

Who needs to act

Vehicles manufactured after April 2023 are E20-certified with compatible materials and engine tuning. If your vehicle is from 2023 or later, the measures below are largely unnecessary — your vehicle was built for this fuel.

If your vehicle is pre-2023, particularly pre-2020, these steps are worth considering. The older the vehicle, the more important they become.

1. Replace vulnerable fuel-system components

Ethanol degrades certain materials over time. The fix is straightforward: replace them with ethanol-resistant alternatives.

Fuel lines and hoses

Older fuel lines are typically made of nitrile rubber (NBR) or natural rubber. Ethanol at 20% concentration swells and softens these materials, leading to cracks, leaks, and eventual failure.

A full tank has less air space, which means less moisture for the ethanol to absorb. Don’t let the tank drop below a quarter, especially in humid climates or during monsoon season.

Drain water from the tank

If your vehicle has a fuel-tank drain plug (common on older bikes and autos), drain a small amount of fuel from the bottom periodically. Water and separated ethanol accumulate at the bottom.

Use the vehicle regularly

Fuel sitting in the tank for weeks absorbs more moisture and is more likely to phase-separate. If you have a vehicle that sits unused (a second car, a seasonal bike), try to run it at least once a week to cycle fresh fuel through the system.

3. Adjust your service schedule

E20 changes the wear profile of your engine and fuel system. Consider these adjustments:
