India has a growing community of vintage and classic vehicle enthusiasts — owners of Jawas, Yezdis, old Bullets, Ambassadors, Fiats, and pre-1990s motorcycles and cars. For these vehicles, E20 is not a minor inconvenience. It is a genuine preservation threat. This article explains why, and what classic vehicle owners can do.

Why vintage vehicles are uniquely vulnerable

Vintage and classic vehicles (generally defined as those over 25–30 years old) were built in an era when Indian petrol contained zero ethanol. Their fuel systems were designed exclusively for pure petroleum. Every component — from the fuel tap to the carburettor float — was specified for a fuel that no longer exists at Indian pumps.

The specific vulnerabilities:

  • Natural rubber and cork seals: Vintage vehicles commonly use natural rubber fuel lines, cork gaskets, and shellac-sealed fuel taps. Ethanol dissolves natural rubber and deteriorates cork — materials that were standard in the 1960s through 1980s but are incompatible with any ethanol content.
  • Zinc and brass carburettors: Older carburettors (Amal, Mikuni copies, vintage Solex) use zinc alloy bodies and brass jets. Ethanol corrodes both metals, particularly in the presence of absorbed moisture.
  • Unpainted steel fuel tanks: Many classic bikes and cars have bare steel tanks with no internal coating. Ethanol + water = accelerated rust from the inside out. Flaking rust enters the fuel stream and clogs everything downstream.
  • No electronic fuel management: Every vintage vehicle is carburetted with no electronic sensing or adaptation. The engine runs on whatever the carburettor jets deliver. When the fuel composition changes, there is no automatic correction.
  • Irreplaceable components: Many vintage parts are no longer manufactured. A corroded Jawa carburettor body or a dissolved Yezdi fuel tap cannot be replaced with a new OEM part. Damage may be irreversible.

What classic vehicle owners can do

Fuel system upgrades

  1. Replace all rubber fuel lines with ethanol-compatible material. Viton (FKM) or PTFE-lined braided hose resists ethanol. Do not use standard nitrile rubber; it will swell and crack.
  2. Coat the inside of the fuel tank. Tank sealant products (epoxy-based tank liners) create a barrier between the steel and the fuel, preventing internal rust. This is one of the most important steps for classic vehicles with bare steel tanks.
  3. Replace cork and fibre gaskets with ethanol-safe alternatives (Viton O-rings, PTFE washers). Cork fuel-tap washers and fibre carburettor gaskets will fail on E20.
  4. Install an inline fuel filter between the tank and the carburettor. This catches rust flakes and debris before they reach the jets. Change it frequently (every 2–3 months).
  5. Re-jet the carburettor. Fit slightly larger main and pilot jets to compensate for ethanol’s lean-running tendency. A knowledgeable mechanic or restorer can advise on the correct sizes for your specific carburettor.

Storage and usage

  • Keep the tank full when stored. A full tank minimises air space and moisture absorption. If the vehicle will sit for more than a month, consider adding a fuel stabiliser.
  • Run the engine periodically. At least every 1–2 weeks, start the engine and let it reach operating temperature. This circulates fresh fuel and prevents stagnation.
  • Drain the carburettor bowl if storing the vehicle for extended periods. Stale E20 in the float bowl causes deposits and corrosion in the jets.
  • Monitor for leaks. After any fuel-system upgrade, check all connections for leaks. Ethanol is more penetrating than petrol and will find gaps that E0 never did.

The preservation argument

Classic vehicles are part of India’s automotive heritage. They represent engineering history, cultural memory, and for many owners, a family legacy. The E20 mandate did not consider this category at all — no exemption, no alternative fuel provision, no preservation guidance.

In other countries with ethanol mandates, E0 (ethanol-free) fuel remains available specifically for classic vehicles, boats, small engines, and other applications where ethanol causes harm. India offers no such option.

A 1972 Jawa was built for a world where petrol was petrol. E20 is chemically hostile to every material in its fuel system. Classic vehicle owners who want to preserve their machines will need to invest in fuel-system upgrades and careful storage practices — costs and efforts imposed by a policy that never considered them. The demand for E0 availability is, for this community, a preservation imperative.
