E20 raises a lot of questions. This article answers the 25 most common ones with concise, factual responses — no speculation, no scare tactics, just what we know and what remains uncertain.
The basics
What is E20 petrol?
E20 is petrol blended with 20 percent ethanol by volume. Ethanol is an alcohol produced from crops like sugarcane, maize, and broken rice. Since April 1, 2026, E20 is the only petrol sold at regular fuel pumps in India.
Can I still buy pure petrol (E0) or E10 anywhere?
No. Since April 1, 2026, E20 is the only petrol sold at regular pumps nationwide. There is no E0, E5, or E10 option.
Why did the government mandate E20?
The stated objectives are: (1) reduce India’s dependence on imported crude oil, saving foreign exchange; (2) support domestic agriculture and ethanol production; (3) reduce carbon emissions (debated). The government claims cumulative forex savings of ₹1.36 lakh crore.
When was it announced?
The February 17, 2026 notification from the Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas mandated E20 at all pumps from April 1, 2026 — approximately six weeks of notice.
Mileage and cost
Does E20 reduce mileage?
Yes. Ethanol has about 34 percent less energy than petrol. E20 delivers approximately 6–7 percent less energy per litre. Official real-world mileage loss: 1–6 percent (ARAI/IIT Kanpur data for new vehicles). Owner-reported: 10–20 percent for older vehicles.
Is E20 cheaper than pure petrol?
No. The pump price is the same or higher. Delhi petrol is ₹102.12/L (July 2026), after a ₹5.61 hike in May 2026. The government’s own FAQ says E20 costs more to produce than pure petrol at current crude prices.
If ethanol is cheaper, why isn’t the fuel cheaper?
At current crude oil prices ($70–85/barrel), ethanol procurement (₹71.86/L for maize-based) is actually more expensive than the petrol it replaces. Ethanol would only be cheaper at crude prices above $120–130/barrel.
How much more am I spending per month?
It depends on your vehicle and usage. A two-wheeler commuter doing 100 km/day with a 10% mileage drop spends roughly ₹680 more per month, or ₹8,160/year. A car owner with similar proportional loss could see a higher absolute cost.
Vehicle compatibility and damage
Is my vehicle compatible with E20?
Vehicles manufactured after April 2023 are E20-certified. Vehicles made before that date were designed for E5 or E10. The older your vehicle, the higher the risk. Use the risk checker to assess your specific vehicle.
Will E20 damage my engine?
For E20-certified vehicles: unlikely, based on available testing data. For older vehicles: the risk ranges from low (2020–2023 fuel-injected) to high (pre-2010 carburetted). Damage mechanisms include rubber degradation, metal corrosion, lean running, and phase separation.
What specific damage can E20 cause?
Fuel-line cracking, O-ring failure, carburettor corrosion, fuel-filter clogging, fuel-pump wear, fuel-tank rust, lean-running engine damage, hard starting, and reduced component life. See our detailed damage article.
Does IIT Kanpur say E20 is safe?
IIT Kanpur found “no evidence E20 harms engines” and mileage drop of “less than 5%” — but in newer, E20-compliant vehicles. The study did not test older vehicles that make up the majority of India’s fleet.
Does using E20 void my warranty?
For post-April 2023 vehicles: manufacturers and SIAM say no, if you follow the service schedule. For pre-2023 vehicles: the warranty situation is less clear, as the vehicle was not certified for E20.
What to do
How can I protect my older vehicle?
Replace nitrile rubber fuel lines with ethanol-compatible ones, change fuel filters more frequently, keep the tank full to reduce moisture, and get carburetted engines re-jetted for E20. See our guide for older vehicles.

Can I add any fuel additive to counter E20?
There is no proven additive that eliminates E20’s effects. Some fuel stabilisers can slow phase separation in stored fuel, but they do not restore the lost energy content or protect incompatible materials. Be sceptical of miracle-cure claims.
Policy and politics
Which ministry is responsible for E20?
Two ministries share responsibility. MoPNG (Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas) mandated E20 fuel at pumps. MoRTH (Ministry of Road Transport & Highways) required new vehicles to be E20-compatible from April 2023. Neither addressed the existing fleet. See our ministry roles explainer.
Is there a conflict of interest in the E20 programme?
Congress has alleged that the family of the minister championing ethanol blending profited from the programme, citing a 2,184% stock surge in a linked ethanol company. The minister has denied any wrongdoing. This remains a disputed, politically contested allegation, not a proven fact.
Did the Supreme Court rule on E20?
The Supreme Court declined to hear a PIL against E20 in September 2025. This does not constitute an endorsement of the policy — it means the petition did not meet the Court’s threshold for intervention.
Do other countries use E20?
India is the only major economy to mandate E20 as the sole fuel grade with no alternatives. Brazil uses E27 but offers E100 as a choice. The US uses E10 standard with E0, E15, and E85 available. The EU offers E5 and E10 side by side. See our global comparison.
