The E20 debate is surrounded by claims from all sides — government statements, industry marketing, social media speculation, and genuine owner experiences. Some claims are true, some are false, and some are half-true. This article takes the most common statements about E20 and checks them against available evidence.

Claim: “E20 is cheaper for consumers”

Verdict: False

E20 is not sold at a lower price than E10 was. Petrol prices went up, not down, after E20 was mandated. The May 2026 hike added ₹5.61/L in Delhi. The government itself has acknowledged that ethanol is costlier than petrol at current crude prices. See our detailed price analysis.

Claim: “E20 causes no mileage loss”

Verdict: False

Ethanol contains 34% less energy per litre than petrol. Blending 20% ethanol reduces the energy content of the fuel by approximately 6–7%. ARAI’s own testing showed 1–6% mileage loss. Owner-reported losses are typically 8–15% in real-world driving. Zero mileage loss would violate thermodynamics.

Claim: “E20 damages engines”

Verdict: Partially true, with nuance

E20 does not damage engines designed for it (post-April 2023 E20-certified vehicles). It can damage fuel-system components in older vehicles: rubber lines, cork seals, zinc and aluminium carburettor parts, and unpainted steel tanks. The damage is to the fuel system, not the engine block itself, but the practical effect — poor running, leaks, stalling — is the same for the owner.

Claim: “E20 reduces pollution”

Verdict: Partially true

E20 can reduce some tailpipe emissions, particularly carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrocarbons (HC), because ethanol burns with more oxygen. However, ethanol combustion can increase acetaldehyde emissions (a carcinogen) and does not meaningfully reduce particulate matter or NOx. Claim: “E20 saves India ₹30,000 crore in forex annually”

Verdict: True but incomplete

The forex savings figure is based on the crude oil that ethanol displaces. The number is real at stated crude prices. However, it does not account for the domestic costs of ethanol production (water, land, food diversion, subsidies) or the consumer cost of reduced mileage (which increases total fuel purchases). The net savings are lower than the headline figure.

Claim: “Ethanol is made from waste products”

Verdict: Partially true, decreasingly so

C-heavy molasses (a genuine sugar-production byproduct) accounts for about 30% of ethanol supply. The rest comes from B-heavy molasses (which diverts some sugar), direct sugarcane juice (which diverts all sugar), maize (a food/feed grain), and rice (a staple food). As E20 demand grows, the share from non-waste sources increases.

Claim: “All vehicles on the road today can run E20”

Verdict: False

Only vehicles manufactured after April 2023 are required to be E20-certified. The approximately 300 million vehicles manufactured before that date were designed for E0 or E5 fuel. Many can physically run on E20 without immediate failure, but they have not been tested or certified for it, and fuel-system degradation may occur over time.

Claim: “Brazil does it, so it works”

Verdict: Misleading comparison

Brazil mandates E27 (higher than India’s E20) but with a critical difference: Brazilian consumers can also buy E100 (pure hydrous ethanol) and most new cars are flex-fuel vehicles that can run on any blend. Brazil offers choice; India offers only E20. Additionally, Brazil’s sugarcane productivity is higher, land is less constrained, and flex-fuel infrastructure has been built over decades.

Claim: “E20 causes phase separation in the monsoon”

Verdict: True, under specific conditions

Ethanol is hygroscopic and absorbs water from humid air. When the water content exceeds approximately 0.5% by volume, the ethanol-water mixture separates from the petrol (phase separation). Claim: “Premium petrol avoids E20”

Verdict: False

Premium/high-octane petrol sold in India (such as Speed/Power/XP95) also contains E20 ethanol blending. There is no ethanol-free petrol option at any retail pump in India as of July 2026. Premium fuel is a higher-octane base, not a different blending standard.

Claim: “You can use additives to counter E20 effects”

Verdict: Limited effectiveness

Fuel stabiliser additives may slow degradation in stored fuel and help keep small amounts of water suspended rather than separated. They cannot restore the 6–7% energy loss, cannot protect incompatible materials from ethanol corrosion over the long term, and cannot substitute for proper fuel-system upgrades (ethanol-compatible lines, seals, and coatings).

Claim: “E20 is just what the car companies wanted so you buy new cars”

Verdict: Unsubstantiated

There is no evidence that automobile manufacturers lobbied for E20. Industry bodies like SIAM (Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers) raised concerns about the timeline and requested a phased approach. OEMs complied with the mandate because it was a regulatory requirement, not because it served their commercial interests. E20 compatibility compliance added cost to vehicle production.

The E20 debate is cluttered with claims that range from accurate to misleading to false. The facts: E20 has less energy, costs the same or more, displaces a small fraction of crude imports, and poses real risks to older vehicles. The policy has genuine strategic rationale and genuine consumer costs. Both things are true. Neither cancels the other.
