Since April 2023, every new car and motorcycle sold in India must be “E20 compatible.” That label appears on stickers, brochures, and government press releases — but what does it actually mean? This article provides the complete OEM-by-OEM certification list, explains exactly what “E20 compatible” covers (and what it does not), and clarifies why even certified vehicles are not immune to the energy penalty that ethanol imposes.
What “E20 compatible” actually means
When a manufacturer labels a vehicle as E20 compatible, it is making two specific claims:
- Material compatibility: The fuel system components — fuel lines, seals, O-rings, gaskets, fuel pump internals, fuel-rail fittings, and the fuel tank lining — are made from materials that can tolerate prolonged exposure to 20 percent ethanol without degrading. This typically means fluoroelastomers (FKM/Viton) instead of nitrile rubber (NBR), stainless steel or specially coated aluminium instead of bare zinc or brass, and ethanol-resistant plastics for fuel-tank internals.
- ECU calibration: The engine control unit (ECU) has been mapped to adjust fuel injection duration, ignition timing, and air-fuel ratio when running on fuel with up to 20 percent ethanol. Because ethanol has a different stoichiometric ratio (9.0:1 versus 14.7:1 for petrol), the ECU must inject more fuel per combustion cycle to maintain the correct mixture. Critically, “E20 compatible” does not mean “zero mileage loss.” It means the vehicle will not suffer material damage from ethanol and that the engine will run correctly on E20. The BS VI Phase 2 mandate: April 2023 onward
The regulatory basis for E20 compatibility is BS VI Phase 2, which came into effect on 1 April 2023. Under this phase, all new vehicle models (type-approved after that date) must meet the following requirements:
- Pass emissions testing on E20 fuel (in addition to E0/E10 baseline tests)
- Demonstrate fuel-system material compatibility with 20 percent ethanol blends through accelerated ageing and soak tests
- Carry an “E20” or “E20–E100” label on the fuel filler cap or near the fuel filler door

What about vehicles manufactured before April 2023?
This is a crucial distinction that is frequently overlooked. Vehicles manufactured before April 2023 — even if they share the same nameplate as a post-2023 model — werenot tested or certified for E20. A 2022 Maruti Swift and a 2024 Maruti Swift may look identical, but they may differ in fuel-system materials, ECU calibration maps, and the specific components used in the fuel delivery system.
The pre-2023 vehicle fleet in India — estimated at over 250 million registered vehicles — was designed, tested, and certified for E0 to E10 fuel. These vehicles are now running on E20 without having been validated for it. The risks this creates are documented in our vehicle damage risk assessment.
E20 compatible cars: OEM-by-OEM listing
The following lists include models that have been certified as E20 compatible under BS VI Phase 2. Note that certification applies to specific model years (post-April 2023 variants) and specific engine-transmission combinations. An older model year of the same nameplate is not automatically covered.
Maruti Suzuki
Maruti Suzuki, India’s largest carmaker by volume, transitioned its entire lineup to E20 compatibility under BS VI Phase 2. Key certified models include:
- Swift — 1.2L K-Series Dual Jet petrol
- Baleno — 1.2L K-Series Dual Jet petrol
- WagonR — 1.0L and 1.2L K-Series petrol
- Alto K10 — 1.0L K-Series petrol
- Brezza — 1.5L K-Series petrol
- Ertiga — 1.5L K-Series petrol (including CNG dual-fuel variant)
- Fronx — 1.0L Turbo and 1.2L NA petrol
- Grand Vitara — 1.5L NA and 1.5L Strong Hybrid petrol
Maruti was among the first manufacturers to publicly acknowledge E20 compatibility and update its owner manuals accordingly.
Hyundai
Hyundai Motor India updated its entire petrol lineup for E20 compatibility. Certified models include:
- Creta — 1.5L NA petrol and 1.5L Turbo petrol
- i20 — 1.2L Kappa petrol and 1.0L Turbo GDI
- Venue — 1.2L Kappa petrol and 1.0L Turbo GDI
- Grand i10 NIOS — 1.2L Kappa petrol
- Verna — 1.5L NA petrol and 1.5L Turbo petrol
- Exter — 1.2L Kappa petrol
- Alcazar — 1.5L Turbo petrol
Tata Motors
Tata Motors certified its passenger vehicle range for E20 compatibility alongside the transition to BS VI Phase 2. Certified models include:
- Nexon — 1.2L Turbo Revotron petrol
- Punch — 1.2L Revotron petrol
- Altroz — 1.2L Revotron NA and 1.2L Turbo petrol
- Tiago — 1.2L Revotron petrol
- Harrier — 2.0L Kryotec diesel (petrol variant where applicable)
- Safari — 2.0L Kryotec diesel (petrol variant where applicable)
Honda
Honda Cars India updated its models for E20 compatibility. Certified models include:
- City — 1.5L i-VTEC petrol (5th generation)
- Amaze — 1.2L i-VTEC petrol
- Elevate — 1.5L i-VTEC petrol
Toyota
Toyota Kirloskar Motor’s India-specific models are E20 certified. Certified models include:
- Innova Hycross — 2.0L NA petrol and 2.0L Strong Hybrid
- Glanza — 1.2L petrol (based on Maruti Baleno platform)
- Rumion — 1.5L petrol (based on Maruti Ertiga platform)
Kia
Kia India’s petrol models are certified for E20 compatibility. Certified models include:
- Seltos — 1.5L NA petrol and 1.5L Turbo GDI
- Sonet — 1.2L NA petrol and 1.0L Turbo GDI

E20 compatible bikes: two-wheeler OEM listing
Two-wheelers represent the majority of vehicles on Indian roads. Like cars, all new two-wheeler models type-approved after April 2023 must be E20 compatible. However, the two-wheeler fleet has an additional concern: many popular models used carburetted engines until recently, and the transition to fuel injection (required for BS VI) happened only in 2020. Older carburetted two-wheelers are particularly vulnerable to E20.

The energy caveat: certification does not eliminate mileage loss
This point deserves emphasis because it is the most common misunderstanding about E20 compatibility. When the government or a manufacturer says a vehicle is “E20 certified,” many consumers interpret this as “this vehicle will run on E20 with no downsides.” That is not accurate.
Ethanol contains approximately 34 percent less energy per litre than petrol. When you blend 20 percent ethanol into petrol, the resulting E20 fuel delivers roughly 6.5 percent less energy per litre than E0 (pure petrol). This is a thermodynamic fact that no amount of ECU calibration can overcome. The ECU can optimise how efficiently the engine uses the available energy, but it cannot create energy that does not exist in the fuel.
In practice, this means that even a brand-new, fully E20-certified vehicle will deliver fewer kilometres per litre on E20 than it would on E0. ARAI’s own testing confirms a mileage drop of 1–6 percent across certified vehicles. Owner reports for certified vehicles typically fall in the 3–7 percent range, which is consistent with the 6.5 percent energy deficit.
Pre-2023 vehicles of the same nameplate: a common confusion
This is perhaps the most important clarification in this article. Vehicle nameplates in India often span multiple generations, and consumers frequently assume that if the 2024 Swift is E20 certified, their 2019 Swift must be as well. This is incorrect for several reasons:
- Different fuel-system materials: The 2019 model may use nitrile rubber seals and non-coated aluminium fittings that were acceptable for E0/E10 but are vulnerable to E20’s higher ethanol content.
- Different ECU maps: The 2019 model’s ECU was calibrated for E0 to E10 fuel. It does not have the wider fuelling maps needed to compensate for E20’s different stoichiometric ratio.
- No retroactive testing: ARAI and other testing agencies did not go back and test pre-2023 models on E20. The certification applies only to the specific variant that was submitted for type approval under BS VI Phase 2.
- No OEM retrofit programme: No manufacturer has offered an ECU reflash or fuel-system upgrade kit for older vehicles to make them E20 compatible. The older vehicle fleet has been left to run on E20 without any adaptation.

How to check if your vehicle is E20 certified
If you are unsure whether your specific vehicle is E20 certified, here are the steps to verify:
- Check the fuel filler cap or door: E20-certified vehicles manufactured after April 2023 carry an “E20” or “E20–E100” label near the fuel filler. If your vehicle does not have this label, it was not certified for E20.
- Check the owner’s manual: Post-April 2023 manuals include a section on fuel requirements specifying E20 compatibility. Older manuals typically specify E5 or E10 as the maximum ethanol content.
- Check the manufacturing date: The vehicle identification plate (usually on the driver’s door frame or under the bonnet) shows the month and year of manufacture. If it predates April 2023, the vehicle was not type-approved under BS VI Phase 2 and is not E20 certified.
- Contact the dealer or OEM: If in doubt, ask the authorised dealer for your vehicle’s specific E20 certification status. Request written confirmation.
What this means for consumers
The E20 compatibility list is reassuring for buyers of new vehicles: your car or bike will not suffer material damage from ethanol in the fuel. But it is important to understand what this certification does and does not guarantee:
- It guarantees that the fuel system will not corrode, degrade, or fail due to ethanol exposure under normal operating conditions.
- It guarantees that the ECU is programmed to adjust for E20’s different combustion characteristics.
- It does not guarantee that your mileage will remain the same. The 6.5 percent energy loss is built into the fuel chemistry and affects every vehicle — certified or not.
- It does not cover vehicles of the same nameplate manufactured before the certification date.
- It does not address the long-term effects of ethanol on engine components beyond the fuel system — such as intake valve deposits, combustion chamber carbon buildup, or exhaust system corrosion.
The broader picture
The E20 compatibility list represents the industry’s response to a government mandate. Manufacturers have complied with the regulation for new vehicles — as they must to sell vehicles in India. But the mandate has not addressed the legacy fleet, has not eliminated the mileage penalty, and has not given consumers the choice to opt out of higher ethanol blends.
If you own a pre-2023 vehicle, the E20 compatibility list does not apply to you. Your vehicle is running on fuel it was not designed for, and the responsibility for any consequences has been shifted to you. Understanding this distinction — between what is certified and what is assumed — is the first step toward making informed decisions about your vehicle’s fuel and maintenance.
